Itinerary

Day Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
Departs 05:00 PM
Originally built by Emperor Trajan who had a villa here, Civitavecchia has flourished as a major port for Rome since the 13th century. Today it is an important ferry terminal and for many travelers the gateway to the Eternal City, Rome. The Renaissance fortifications that surround the harbor area were begun by Bramante and completed by Michelangelo in 1535.

Day Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy
Arrives 08:00 AM Departs 05:00 PM
Set on the Gulf of Tigullio between Rapallo and Portofino, the resort/fishing town of Santa Margherita centers around the lovely harbor, where boating and sunbathing are the orders of the day. The town has some good shopping options, lovely cafes and interesting sights like its 16th-century castle and the 17th-century Basilica di Santa Margherita.

Day St Tropez, France
Arrives 08:00 AM Departs 11:00 PM
On the southern shore of one of the most beautiful bays of the Riviera, the little port of St. Tropez has become one of the best known resorts in Europe, a crossroads where journalists, photographers, writers, artists and celebrities meet. Guy de Maupassant discovered the town, but it was the painters who made it more widely known - Signac, Matisse, Bonnard, Marquet, Camoin - who all stayed for varying amounts of time. The harbor teems with life. Fishing boats, excursion craft and hundreds of yachts share the harbor. On the waterfront are old pink and yellow houses, which have been converted into cafes, cabarets and restaurants, luxury boutiques, galleries and antique shops. A picturesque and cosmopolitan crowd strolls the streets in season.

Day Toulon, France
Arrives 08:00 AM Departs 06:00 PM
"The sun-dappled port of Toulon lies at the very heart of the French Riviera, halfway between Marseille and St.-Tropez. The pleasant city of some 200,000 has a long history. It was settled as early as the 7th century B.C.E. by Greek colonists, followed by the Romans in the 2nd century B.C.E. The city is best known as a center for the French Navy, beginning in the 15th century and continuing to today. The harborfront fortifications are only the most obvious reminders of this legacy. Toulon's cityscape was shaped by the preeminent city planner of the 19th century, Baron Haussmann. Before he reimagined Paris, Hausmann was the prefect of Var (the region of which Toulon is the capital) and the city's upper town served as a trial run of his ideas on urban design. Buildings from that era include France's second-largest opera house as well as the Galeries Lafayette and a number of stately streets and squares."

Day Saint-Florent, Corsica, France
Arrives 08:00 AM Departs 05:00 PM
On Corsica's northeast coast, this port started as a Genoese outpost, and the 15th century citadel still looks out over the harbor. Today it attract tourists, due to its proximity to the famous Patrimonio vineyards, which produce Corsica's best wines, particularly muscats and to Saleccia Beach, considered one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Inland, the rugged maquis of the Agriate Desert is scenic, but forbidding.

Day Golfo Aranci (Costa Smeralda), Sardinia, Italy
Arrives 07:00 AM Departs 03:00 PM
The Sardinian coastline is serrated by deep-cut coves of sparkling sea, surrounded by rocky prominences and edged in lovely strands of beach. The Aga Khan fell in love with the place, and dubbed it the Costa Smeralda, creating a magnet for the global glitterati. At Golfo Aranci, shining arcs of silvery sand are linked into a larger curve, encircled by a muscular peninsula that looms protectively between the town and the sea. It looks expensive, and it is.

Day Trapani, Italy
Arrives 08:00 AM Departs 04:00 PM
"Trapani, an ancient port city on the far western end of Sicily, is closer to Tunis—as the crow flies—than it is to Taormina. Separated from North Africa by the Strait of Sicily, the city has been ruled by the Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans and the Kingdom of Naples, and sits on a narrow spit of crescent-shaped land (the name Trapani is derived from the Greek word for “sickle”) surrounded by a busy port and harbor, numerous salt pans and beaches. From the fishing port, daily catches of octopus, cuttlefish, shrimp and sardines are sold at a morning market. This area of Sicily is known for the mattanza, the ritual funneling of bluefin tuna into smaller and smaller nets and then killing them. The practice has been banned and largely disappeared due to drastic overfishing, but still survives in the nearby Aegadian Islands. Because the city was heavily bombed in World War II, many of its buildings and apartment blocks are modern, but the old town has been restored to Baroque grandeur. The fortified walls of the Bastione Imperiale protected the city along its seafront, and visitors can climb to the top for an excellent view of the town spreading back toward the castle hill town of Erice. Day Valletta, Malta
Arrives 07:00 AM
"The ancient city of Valletta is teeming with historic monuments, churches and gardens. At just one-third of a square mile in area, Europe's southernmost capital is one of the easiest to explore on foot. Given Malta's strategic location and succession of rulers including the Romans, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French and British, it's somewhat surprising to see Valletta so well preserved. The city dates back to the 16th century and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Extensive restorations of historic buildings are underway, including the rebuilding of the city entrance to mark Valletta's recognition as the European Capital of Culture in 2018."
